Day 34 - Mon 6 May: Cobar to Cunnamulla

Temp: 4-23 degC

Drive: 419km; total towed: 3910km

Ride/walk: 8km

It was quite fresh this morning (not the freshest though) however it didn’t seem to be cold. The sky was beautifully clear.

Mark was still in bed when we left but Sue came out to say goodbye and waved us off. It was lovely to catch up with them on our different tours. We were on the road about 7:30am heading straight for the refuelling point; we’d had our coffee so it was only fair to give the truck a drink as well.

Off to Cunnamulla today and the road from Cobar to Bourke was one of the best we’ve driven on this trip and we made good time. There is a lot of water everywhere which may explain the minor flood warnings for many of the rivers in the region eg. Warrego. The land was very flat and largely dry with many trees still trying desperately to cling to life. You can tell which paddocks have goats or other livestock; the lower reaches of the trees have been eaten to the same height. Despite the water lying about after the recent rain it has certainly not broken the drought; the green shoots everywhere would certainly be welcome by the farmers.

Stopped in Bourke for breakfast next to the Memorial Park and Bowls Club.  The road out of Bourke was decidedly bumpy but it did improve slightly. The road was really good in places and not so good in others. About 100km out of Cunnamulla the quantity of water on the side of the road and in the paddocks increased significantly. Let's hope this is a good sign and a good season for the farmers.

We arrived in Cunnamulla at the Cunnamulla Tourist Park (yes a caravan park) just after 1pm, set up, had lunch and went for a ride. It was not a terribly long ride however we did see most of what there is to see in Cunnamulla.

It was quite odd being in a caravan park again and having access to power and water. Wendy kept waiting for the pump to kick in when using the tap and went to boil the water on the stove instead of the electric kettle.  Amazing how you adapt to your surroundings. It does give us an opportunity to really charge everything up to full volume again.
