Day 30 - Thu 2 May: Deniliquin to Echuca

Temp: 16-17 degC

Ride: 10km

Drive: 84km; total towed: 2857km

It absolutely bucketed down last night from about midnight on. Just before 6am, Greg asked Wendy if she was awake as he was worried about getting the van out due to the heavy rain and the more heavy rain which was yet to come. So, up we got and did the quickest pack-up ever. The road was not very bad at all as it was a sandy road not a muddy dirt road; with the exception of one small patch which we traversed with ease. We went into town and stopped at the Info Centre, brewed up and waited for the sun to come up.

We drove into Mathoura on our way south just to see what it was all about, nothing to see, moving right along, in the rain.

We arrived at Echuca Rotary Park at 9am. The park is essentially a dust bowl but today it was a muddy pie. $10/night for the use of the dump point and a water point. There are toilets right here however, they are owned by another organisation and are locked to "bloody caravanners". We found a nice spot between vans, parked and set up. After breakfast we headed off on the bikes to explore Echuca. Beechworth Bakery (in Echuca) was our first stop; you just have to stop at a Beechworth Bakery if you find one. After coffess and a vanilla slice and an omelette toastie we explored Echuca. Port of Echuca, Art Gallery and main street.

Back to the van for a change of clothes to go grocery shopping. That task completed we came back to the van for an LLD and a bit of R&R before heading off to the Workers Club for dinner. Although the prices are a little over double those of the Torbo pub, the seating, atmosphere and service were really good. Thank goodness we got in early as it was standing room only by about 7pm.

Back home for some blogging and planning the next route. We are a bit over the rain and gloomy days so may head more north to try and avoid this weather event. Thunder and lightning are all about as this is being written.  It may be another wild night.
