It was an earlier than usual start as we had to be in Cobar today to meet up with Mark and Sue. We packed up and left at 7am only to stop in Hay near the Info Centre to fill up with water. We also had to visit the dump point which was at the Showgrounds. We were finally on the road for proper at 7:30am and arrived at Cobar just after 1pm, so that was a pretty good run. It was easy driving today as it was flat and relatively straight. We saw plenty of goats, emu, sheep and cattle, plenty of dead kangaroos, and one rather large red deer.
We had two stops today; first at Goolgowi for fuel and second just outside of Hillston for breakfast.
When we arrived at the free camp behind the Cobar Memorial Services Club there were only three other vans here already. Last time we were here, we got one of the very few spots left. Not long after we arrived, Sue and Mark pulled in next to us.
We went for a ride around Cobar, the bits that we did not see last time. There is a fantastic cycle track that we made good use of, but lost it when we got near to the airport. We met up with M&S at the mining display and decided it was too cold to be out, so went back to the vans for a cuppa and a catch up chat.
About 5:30pm we headed around the corner to the Club for dinner. After ordering our drinks we went to order our dinner only to be told that they wouldn't start cooking until 6pm. No problem; we sat and chatted some more. When the meals did eventually arrive, they were delicious; the restaurant is allegedly a mix of Chinese, Asian, Thai and Australian. We thought it was more Chinese than anything.
A short walk home was bracing with the lazy breeze to our vans for the night.
Thank you Mark and Sue for meeting us here in Cobar. It is always nice to catch up with your 'next door neighbour' when out and about in the big back yard.
We know we are big sookie la la's, but we are heading back to Queensland for a bit of relief from these relatively arctic conditions.
